Week 3 Pairings

Week 3 will be on Monday, December 1 at Interlake High School (the same location as Week 1).

WEEK 3 PAIRINGS (Seed in brackets; score in parentheses)
WHITE Result BLACK
Redmond [2] (8.0) Interlake A [1] (10.0)
Interlake C [5] (7.0) Interlake B [3] (7.0)
Bellevue [7] (5.0) ICS [6] (6.0)
Overlake [4] (4.5) Issaquah A [10] (4.5)
Eastlake [8] (3.0) Mercer Island [9] (3.5)
Interlake D [12] (3.5) Bothell [14] (3.0)
Issaquah B [13] (2.0) Skyline [11] (3.0)

The pairings on the top four boards had no real conflicts with standard Swiss pairings.  Two of the matchups featured teams that had the same colors; the higher seed alternates in both cases.

The bottom three boards, on the other hand, required some shuffling, as the natural Swiss pairings would require three rematches from the previous week (something that happens often when those three matches had either 3-2 or 2.5 – 2.5 scores).

Team Pages Updated through Week 2

The team pages are now updated through Week 2.  Please let me know if there are any errors.

One thing frequent visitors may notice is that there are fewer players listed now; I removed any players who have not played through the first two weeks from the webpage.  This doesn’t mean that they can’t play; it’s just to make it quicker to update the pages.

Re-edited on Monday, November 24 at 3:27 p.m.  Interlake D was added to the league as an evener to allow Interlake C to continue play.  League directors decided that they would inherit Issaquah C’s score of 1.0/5.

League Format

At the Coaches’ Meeting today, we decided to follow the format of the league for last season.

For those who don’t recall or who were not part of the league last season, here’s how that works:

Regular Season (5 weeks):

All 14 teams in the league will participate in 5 rounds of Swiss, paired based on game points.

The top four teams (subject to league rules limiting the number of B teams that can qualify, and state rules that prohibit C teams from qualifying) will automatically qualify for state.  If necessary, blitz tiebreaks will determine teams if there are teams tied for a top-four position.  These tiebreakers will take place following the Round 5 matches on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Playoffs (3 weeks):

The four teams that qualified above will participate in a round-robin.  The team with the most total game points from these three matches will be crowned KingCo Champion.  In the event teams are tied for the KingCo title, a blitz playoff will determine the KingCo champion.  All other places (2nd – 4th) will also be determined by game points, with head-to-head records breaking ties.

The remaining eight teams will participate in a double-elimination bracket.  (The two C teams will not participate in this bracket).  Presuming we understand state rules properly, four teams from this bracket will qualify for state, so any team that can win two of three matches will qualify for state as well.  Each match must have a winner; if a match is tied 2.5 – 2.5, the teams will participate in a blitz tiebreaker to determine the winner.

During the playoffs, it is not only possible but somewhat likely that teams will play against teams they’ve played against in the regular season.  These rematches will not be avoided.  Colors will be swapped during these rematches from their regular season match, unless doing so would cause one team to have three of the same color in a row.  In the event that the match is not a rematch, colors are determined as if these rounds were the continuation of the Swiss from the regular season, working first to equalize colors, then to alternate colors.
